1999. A State Department mailroom worker based outside Washington at a
mail facility in Sterling, Virginia, has tested positive for anthrax
exposure and mail deliveries to the department have been stopped, State
Department spokesman Richard Boucher said October 25, 2001. “An
employee has tested positive for anthrax … in Sterling, Virginia.
Where and how he was exposed is not known,” he told reporters. He said
the man was hospitalized but it was not known whether he had the
inhaled or skin version of anthrax and gave no details of his
